Question:
I am a miler and the third lap of every race I seem to lose
concentration. Can you give me any tips to help me?
Answer:
This is a very common problem for many milers. There are
several things that you can do to help maintain
concentration during the entire race.
1.
PRACTICE: During
your interval practice session, set goals to work on the
latter intervals. 3/4 of the way through your interval
session, really make a point to hit your set times. Also,
you should make a goal for every race to hit that third lap
hard.
2. VISUALIZE: Practice
visualizing yourself feeling relaxed and comfortable during
the third lap. You may want to do this every night before
you go to bed. Spend about 30 minutes. You should also
visualize yourself feeling relaxed, comfortable and
confident during your interval sessions as well. You can do
this on the field and off.
3. JOURNAL: Get a journal for
yourself and identify all your negative thoughts that take
place during that middle interval. Know what your demons
are. Once you know your thoughts, write 3 positive thoughts
you could use for every negative thought. Add these into
your visualizations, and you will be effective.
Practice, practice, practice works every
time. Identifying your weakness is the first step - the next
is to make it your strength. Good Luck!!!
Question:
How do I know when my shoes are worn out?
Answer:
Today shoe companies make shoes so good that
it makes it hard to tell when your shoes are worn out.
The old way was to check to see if the mid-sole was bowing
out. It also, use to be said that you should be able to put
300-400 miles on a shoe. Neither of those are good
indicators. Outsole wear is also not a very good indicator
because outsoles are so strong these days that many of them
rarely wear out.
The best way to tell if you need new shoes is if you start
having aches in your knees, hips, back, ankle, or foot.
Also, if you start feeling the ground more then usual this
is a good indicator. If either of these are happening, then
you need new shoes. If you are still unsure, go to your
local running specific shop, ask for the manager (they are
usually the best to work with) and have them look at your
shoes. Good Luck!!
Question:
How long before a race should I eat my last
meal?
Answer:
3 - 4 hours is recommended. Also, eat mild
foods that will not upset your stomach.
